About Us
Masterwork Academy is here because we stand on the shoulders of many who first tilled the rich soil of inspiration.
The creative vision cast in 2010 by Charlie Stephenson for the 8:10 Building started it all. That vision stirred our First Church “base camp” into conversation about what could be. Next came a discernment committee who formulated the basic idea of an after school program centered around the gospel and the arts. Following, came an implementation team. This group put structure on the discernment committee’s outline. They researched costs, engaged in conversation with Tulsa Public Schools to determine the need, and paved the way for a two-day-per-week pilot program.
On July 24, 2017, with an enrollment of about 20 students, Masterwork Academy’s partnership with Anderson Elementary began. In that two-week summer session, our students receive training in ballet, visual art, music, and Bible study. We continue to pursue these disciplines, but have added theatre, faith and fitness, an expansion of music to include a piano lab, digital animation and graphic design, and reading tutoring.
Through our mission centered on the arts, our students learn to see the beauty in God’s creation—including in themselves. Working from the common ground of creativity, we found we are one community, neighbors who love one another and have a place together in the body of Christ
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, for good works which God prepared in beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
Since our founding in 2017, over 300 students have received arts education and personal development through Masterwork Academy.
Masterwork Academy has grown to a five-day-per-week program serving K-5th graders throughout the school year.
In addition, we offer reading tutoring, two summer camp opportunities, and MAYA (Masterwork Academy Young Artists) which is a week-long, full-day, multi-disciplinary summer arts intensive.
